Make Your Home Healthy and Comfortable This Winter

Tips to Get Your Home Comfortable & Healthy for the Holiday Season, Greenstone Energy

Winter is here, and Southeastern Pennsylvania homeowners are scrambling to get ready for the chilly weather that’s to come. There’s no getting around the fact that the cold winter weather can wreak havoc on homes in Pennsylvania and that it causes our furnaces to work overtime. Fortunately, there are a number of things you can do to make your home healthy and comfortable this winter, and the team at Green Stone Energy is here to help.

Not sure where to start? Here are four tips for winterizing your home.

1. Improve Your Insulation

Did you know that as many as 90% of U.S. homes are under-insulated, and most homeowners are unaware that they even have an issue on their hands? A poorly insulated home can never be truly efficient, which is why we recommend upgrading to high-performance spray foam or cellulose insulation. Both options can effectively help to keep your home warm this winter, especially if the current insulation isn’t doing its job.

2. Air Seal Your Home

Strong winds are common in Pennsylvania during the winter, and we often head inside to escape them. But what if your home isn’t able to properly shield you and your family from the elements? If there are areas throughout the house where drafts are prevalent, you already know what this can be like. The solution to the problem can be found in air sealing.

3. Use Heavy Drapes for Extra Insulation

If you have a lot of windows in your home, there’s a good chance you’re losing heat. One way to mitigate this is to hang heavy drapes over your windows rather than light blinds. These will serve as a form of added insulation to help keep the winter winds at bay. There are even drapes made specifically for this purpose that are an inexpensive way to reduce unwanted heat loss.

4. Have Your Heating System Looked At

When was the last time you called a professional to perform maintenance on your heating system? If you can’t remember (and chances are you can’t), that means you’re well overdue for an inspection. A simple HVAC tune-up can mean the difference between a safe and comfortable winter and emergency breakdown—don’t wait until that happens to take action.
